Last year, Sega released Sonic Frontiers, a new 3D Sonic title that took the series to a semi-open world for the first time. In general, Sonic Frontiers was a huge hit among fans, which made it seem likely that a sequel would happen someday. And although that may happen, it seems that the next 3D Sonic game from Sega will be a bit more traditional.
According to a blogger named Zippo, who has had accurate information about Sonic the Hedgehog in the past, Sega is planning to release its next entry in the series sometime in 2024. Instead of being a sequel to Sonic Frontiers, Sega would be developing a game that is much smaller and will be similar to titles like Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations. Besides these general details, the game would also feature Shadow the Hedgehog prominently, which would match the character’s inclusion in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie.
“I’m hearing that this game is a kind of continuation of Sonic Colors, Generations, Lost World and Forces, rather than Sonic Frontiers of 2022, which is a completely new branch for the series as a whole, and that will have its own sequel soon,” Zippo wrote in his latest blog. “This will be a simpler 3D Sonic game of ‘run and jump’ developed only for next-generation consoles. No open zone this time. It will also be the first Sonic title to come out on Nintendo’s new system.”
For now, Sega itself has not confirmed any of this, so take this rumor with a grain of salt. That said, Sega will certainly release more Sonic games in the future and having a new title ready to debut along with the next Sonic movie would make a lot of sense. So, if this new 3D title comes true, we should know more about it in the first half of 2024.
